Y ’s 1972 – Y ’s CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH
A unique style──Launched in 1972 by Yohji Yamamoto as his first brand, Y's is his very philosophy in clothing-making. Always going forward, an expression of an identity that never changes. In 2022, through further creativity, Y's look back upon 50 years of its history.
A collaboration between Y's and MACKINTOSH, announced as one of the capsule collections.
Innovative and functional fabric. In 1823, Charles Mackintosh invents the rubberized tarpaulin Macintosh cloth. This technique is still evolving after 200 years since its creation.
RAINTEC CLASSIC, a functional material developed by MACKINTOSH, is used for the coat "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH" that will be an addition to the "Y's 1972" series.
RAINTEC CLASSIC is a functional material made by bonding a breathable waterproof film instead of rubber between two cotton fabrics. It is a new standard material of MACKINTOSH that has not only waterproofness but also water repellency and breathability.
RAINTEC CLASSIC, lighter and less taut than conventional rubberized fabrics, gives a sense of lightness despite the generous quantity of fabric, within the interesting Y's pattern shape (clothing pattern) . A new standard material makes it possible to create a coat with an unique form with a sense of volume that is typical to Y's, resulting of innovative and free modeling. Y's reconstructs the established style of "MACKINTOSH coat" and expands its possibilities.
A hybrid of functionality and craftsmanship ── The coat of "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH" incorporates the handmade manufacturing method used for conventional rubberized coats in the lining. A traditional waterproofing method, the same as in the early 19th century, when rubberized coats were born, with waterproof tape manually applied to the back of all seams.
To apply the tape, the craftsman takes a special adhesive on his finger, stretches it, attaches the tape, rolls it from above, and dries it. All coats are completed through this process, in limited production.
Y's tried to connect this manual process to a sculptural expression. Normally, a dark lining is used to hide the attached tape, but with the "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH" coat, a white lining is used so that the tape is inevitably visible as a design feature. "Turn the front and back" ── Both types are reversible, so you can enjoy each color from front to back.
Y's commitment to unique form and reconstruction, MACKINTOSH's unwavering innovation and craftsmanship has created the "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH" coat.
Limited Edition ── A limited number of coats finished at the MACKINTOSH's Scottish factory. All "Y's CRAFTED BY MACKINTOSH" coats will be complete with the handwritten edition numbers.
